Buzzwords of yesterday are stiffness and compliance, young jedi, being too difficult to quantify by the average Joe.
“13.2% lighter” is the first new buzzword of today. Easily quantifiable by the average Joe in a bike shop by using the most accurate of tools: the force of their arms when trying to lift the bike off the showroom floor. I’ll let you in on a secret of how this works: you put a Tarmac SL6 weighing 7,00kg next to a Tarmac SL7 weighing 7,00kg with a tag on it on which is written “13,2% lighter than the Tarmac SL6!” The average Joe walks in, looks at both bikes, picks up the SL6 and lifts it 3 inches off the floor. Then proceeds to do the same with the SL7. “Wow! You can really feel the weight difference with the SL7!!”
“12.1% more aero” is the second new buzzword of today. Easily quantifiable by the average Joe by: a) the lack of exposed cables and b) the sheer amount of photos showing this bike inside a wond tunnel, preferably with smoke injected into the windstream to highlight the streamlines and accentuate the aero “advantage”.
The new Tarmac SL7: 13.2% lighter, 12.1% more aero. That, young jedi, is how you sell bikes today.
On ne peut pas dire que c’est tout faux, non?
